Larkin Library - 2016/2017 A Year In Review (17)

Last year Larkin Library had an average of 625 student visits per week. We lent out 2,483 books to students and staff.

408 books were also borrowed from Overdrive, our Digital Library. Our 1st & 2nd year students did Accelerated Reader quizzes on 1,135 books and read over 23 million words.

In addition to Library classes for all 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th years and being open before school and during lunchtime, Larkin Library has held so many events throughout the year.  These include a Chinese restaurant in the library, a Food Fiesta prepared by students and a Language Speed Dating event. The Library hosted 'Books with Breakfast' for all students and staff on World Book Day, with pastries, fruit & bagels along with a 'Mobile Library', sofas and beanbags. We arranged for Irish History Live to visit and a couple of storyteller visits as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge as well as Irish games and conversation classes.

We had visits from authors Andy Mulligan, Rod Smith, Sarah Webb, Kevin McDermott, Michael  O'Reilly & Brendan Mac Evilly. Our students wrote and created their own sensory book for children with visual impairments in ChildVision along with producing several story sacks. Some of our students had the opportunity to read their work aloud in The National Library as part of We Write What We Like.

We held a Careers Fair for 3rd years, a Technology Week which included several computer programming workshops and technology talks specifically aimed at girls. Joanne Dolan of Teen-Turn came and spoke to our 3rd year girls and 18 of them have now applied to do a two week internship in local technology companies.

Our students created some amazing entries for a Book Art exhibition which we brought them to visit in the Central Library and which has now moved to Pearse St Library. We've got new bookmarks printed for our library, all designed by our students.

We are looking forward to another exciting year starting in September and we already have several events planned to welcome new students, staff and parents/guardians.
