Transition Year

Go Back

Transition year in Larkin Community College aims to develop the qualities of courtesy, cooperation and concern for other people, to develop self-awareness, decision-making and coping skills   .

It aims to provide a transition between Junior and Senior Cycles and lay foundations for further studies and to establish realistic educational, occupational and life ambitions

To introduce a new range of experiences beyond the scope of the traditional curriculum and encourage initiative, self reliance and responsibility

Work Experience

We work with the NEIC on sourcing work experience for our students. The NEIC programme helps to open doors, raise awareness and aspirations and, ultimately, to provide students in Dublin 1 schools with access to and insight into professions and career paths outside their existing network of contacts.

Below are some of the business our students have got work experience in

TY Work Experience Student Reflections

“My name is Francheska Banguis and I am in 5th year in Larkin Community College. I went to PWC for my TY work experience. I was placed in the clients and marketing department. I was given a laptop for the week which I was very excited about. Some of my tasks included putting information on to excel spreadsheets, accompanying clients to meetings and showing them around as well as work shadowing my mentor. I think this was my favourite work experience and it really helped to focus me in taking a closer step to my goal of studying accounting in the future. I would highly recommend a work placement here.”

Francheska Banguis TY 2018/2019

"I got to do my work experience in the office of An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar. This experience showed me how a professional work environment operates and the high standards that they constantly works towards. Not everyone gets to spend a week working in Dail Eireann and I think it is an experience that will forever stay with me."

Alex Rusu, TY 2018/2019

M&S Skills at Work

The Marks and Spencers, Business in the Community Programme has been running in the school for a number of years. It involves the students doing a CV and interview preparation workshop with Marks and Spencers, mock interviews, a site visit to M&S and finally a wrap up session. Some of our students have also had the chance to do a merchandising workshop with them which they really enjoyed it! This is a really important module for our TYs as it not only gives them advice on how they can improve their CVs but also gives them feedback on their mock interviews on what they do well and what they can improve on. Thank you to Marks and Spencers for working with us each year on this module. It is always one of the highlights for our students.

Junk Kouture

Junk Kouture is an optional module run every year in TY. Students work for the year planning, designing and making a costume to enter into the annual Junk Kouture Competition! For the past number of years we have been lucky enough to have students get to the final with Madison winning a trip to the Cannes Film Festival with her costume “Me Granny Got it in Guinneys”.

Below is an album showcasing some of what the students get up to in Junk Kouture.

TY Motorbike Mechanics

TY Motorbike Mechanics is a 15 week module where students spend their time working on the engine of motorbikes. They learn the basic skills of motorbike and engine care, how to strip a bike down as well as painting and spraying panels of bikes and putting it all back together.

This class is generally limited in numbers and there is always high demand!! We would really recommend it for any students with an interest in mechanics or for students who are unsure if it is something that would interest them! It is always a firm favourite!

TY Outdoor Pursuits

TY Outdoor Education is a 15 week module where students have the opportunity one day a week to go out and explore Dublin and Wicklow. They do a variety of water sports, rock climbing, walks, orienteering, coasteering as well as finding an appreciation for nature and all that their local area has to offer!! This is always a popular module with students and one they really enjoy!

Animation

In animation class students learn the basics of animation, they create storyboards and characters and at the end of the module should have created a short piece on film. Students also learn miniature set and prop design as well as how to make a flip book.
They can work individually or in group work. Group work is encouraged to build these skills in TY.

Wellbeing Initatives

TY Students support many of the wellbeing initatives in school. This years group have been working towards a Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador School Award and the Pieta House Amber Flag. The students have supported Friendship Week, LGBT Week, planned and delivered wellbeing classes for Junior students, worked with our Chaplain Ms. O'Higgins on In November We Remember. It is great to see so many TY students get involved in these initatives and in promoting them around the school!

Italian Trip

Each TY year group get the opportunity to go on a trip to Italy. Most of you have studied Italian for Junior Cert and during the TY you spend the year developing your language skills and learning about Italian culture. What better way to put all that you have learned that going on a trip to Italy! It is an optional trip. Students can pay in instalments. The trip is subject to minimum numbers.

Workshops

TY students have the opportunity to take part in different workshops and trips out. This year some of workshops included a Public Speaking Workshop, a Personal Safety Workshop, a Debunking the Myths Workshop, Genetics Workshop, Drama Workshop and a Creative Writing Workshop. Some of the trips included a trip to Squirrels Scrambles,  Airfield, Awesome Walls, Hugh Lane Gallery and 14 Henrietta Street.
