Beginning on a phased basis in September 2014, the new junior cycle features revised subjects and short courses, a focus on key skills, and new approaches to assessment and reporting. Schools have more freedom to design junior cycle programmes that meet the learning needs of all students.
Classroom-based assessments
During second and third year, students complete a number of Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) and Assesment Tasks.

Larkin Community College offers a Junior Cert programme full of diversity and opportunities. Students will study the following compulsory subjects:
- English
- Irish
- Maths
- Italian or Spanish
- CSR
- P-Tech
- Science
- History
- Geography
In addition to this all incoming 1st Year students are given the chance to sample all possible option subjects at the start of the Year which include:
- Business Studies
- Art
- Science
- Woodwork
- Music
- Home Economics
This allows students to get a taste of what suits their abilities best and then make an informed decision on which subjects to pursue.
