Basketball Scholarship 2017/2018 Year In Review (71)
In what was an historic year for basketball in Larkin, competing at B level in boys for the first time the senior lads produced some memorable performances in reaching the regional quarter finals after victories over Hansfield, Lutrellstown and Castleknock Community College. Unfortunatley the team fell short against an extremely talented Adamstown in the quarter final. The lads suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the All Ireland Cup losing in overtime to eventual runners up Castleknock College. Having led throughout and minus the services of our National League star Salim Yahuza the lads showed great heart and determination with Thomas Murphy hitting a game high 30 points. The team finished the year with victory against Marino in the CDETB final. It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to an amazing bunch of lads who have brought basketball to a new level in Larkin College and have paved the way for the younger generations to follow. We wish Jiahuang Ren, Jiahui Ren, Andzrej Bobko, John Lamoste and Paul Heffernen all the best as they embark on an exciting future outside the college.
Our Junior boys teams finished the season on a bright note with victories for our first years and third years in the CDETB finals. Our first years led by Kurt Raagas and the impressive Kyle Hayden stormed to victory over St Kevins. Cebisa Malinga and Moses Okwghai were also superb. Our third years secured victory over Kylemore College after strong performances from captain James Foley, Fillipe Esteves and Mark Szeder.
Our girls teams had a fantastic season at C level with all teams reaching the regional playoffs. Our under 16 girls were extremely impressive in qualifying for the Regional Semi Final and the All Ireland Quarter Final. The team were back boned by strong performances from Amraan Maxamad, Rose Mesquita, Samantha Kerrigan, Alicia Jadia and captain Maja Miejdejko. The girls lost to eventual All Ireland champions Gortnor Abbey of Mayo, while running Colasite Pobail Setanta extremely close in the league Semi Final losing out 64-51. Our Senior girls led by captain Juli Bakasharyn fell to an agonising 51 - 46 defeat to Rathdown in the league quarters.
The Junior teams also had success with our second years topping their pool undefeated after strong showings from our superstar captain Alicia Jadia, Suvd Ulambayor, Tatiana Orlov, Joanne Bambe, Diane Hrivsceau and Sunna Begum. The girls suffered a narrow quarter final defeat to Firhouse CC who were inspired by their Irish international. Our First year girls acquitted themselves well all season with leah Tighe and Gizelle Roldan Impressing.
The players had some notable achievements outside of school with Alicia Jadia being selected to represent North Dublin in the Under 15 girls Liffey Challenge. Thomas Murphy and Salim Yahuza were members of the Dublin Lions team who lost out to Templeogue in the under 18 cup final, while Salim also represented the Lions National League squad who reached the Division One Playoff Final. Well done to all on a successful year and we look forward to continuing our development next season and beyond.
