Building Belonging, Exploring Migration Through Art and Storytelling
We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our students who took part in the Building Belonging project earlier this year. A four week zine-making workshop series that invited creativity, reflection and conversation around the theme of migration.
Facilitated by artist and educator Victory Nwabu-Ekeoma in partnership with Superprojects, the programme ran throughout March and engaged 20 students from Larkin Community College. Through hands on workshops, students explored their own experiences of movement, whether across countries, towns, or even through the stories of family members and friends.
The project encouraged participants to reflect deeply on what it means to move, to adapt and to belong. By creating personal and collective zines, students developed both artistic and storytelling skills while fostering a deeper empathy for one another’s lived experiences. The workshops offered a meaningful opportunity to listen, share, and connect by building a stronger sense of community within the classroom and beyond. The final zines serve not only as powerful pieces of visual art but also as honest, heartfelt accounts of migration and identity. They remind us of the value of listening to one another’s stories and the importance of creating spaces where every voice can be heard.
We extend our sincere thanks to Victory Nwabu-Ekeoma for leading this inspiring programme, as well as to the dedicated staff and students of Larkin. We are also grateful to Ms. O’Higgins, Ms. Crowe, Rayne Booth, Giulia Berto, The Arts Council, and Dublin City Council for their generous support.
Special thanks to Pedro Mesquita for capturing the project on film and to John Cruise for editing the final video.
