Arts Development Programme Information

The Arts Development Programme is aimed students who have a particular talent of an artistic nature – whether that is art, dance, drama or music. The aim is to allow students on the programme to develop their talents during the time in Larkin and at the same time improve their academic performance in other areas of the Junior Cycle Programme.

Students who are interested in the Arts Programme are given the option to select it in the September of first year. If the class is over subscribed students may be asked to audition.

Junior Cycle

Students have an opportunity to take Performing Arts in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year. They have one hour a week and learn lots of drama techniques and performance skills through fun games and group work while exploring topics and issues that are important to them. They can take take part in a whole school show, after school drama club and in projects with local theatres companies such as Fishamble: the new play company, The Gate Theatre and The Abbey Theatres. They have opportunities to attend the theatre with their class which they always immensely enjoy.

TY

Students can choose Performing Arts in TY and have two hours a week to complete a program of devising and theatrical skills while exploring and applying the styles of different theatre directors and practitioners. Students create their own theatre pieces as an ensemble which are performed at the end of the year. The students who take TY performing arts always make lots of new friends and have a lot of fun in the process. They have the opportunity to be involved in the whole school show and will be working with The Abbey Theatre on their devised pieces. Throughout the year, they will have the chance to take up offers to go to live performances at the theatre and partake in workshops with our partners The Abbey Theatre and The Gate Theatre.

Drama, Film and Theatre Studies (Leaving Certificate)

Drama, Film, and Theatre Studies is a dynamic new Leaving Certificate subject, currently being piloted in 50 schools across Ireland. Designed for those with a passion for creativity, storytelling, and the performing arts, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of stage, screen, and production. Whether your interest lies in acting, filmmaking, or behind-the-scenes craftsmanship, this subject provides the tools and opportunities to develop your skills and express your vision.
